What’s Good: This course, which was previously known as Gastonia Municipal, is inexpensive and has a fun layout (I paid $30 on a Friday). It’s a very short course, even from the tips, but the condition of the greens make it challenging. They are hard and roll quickly, which makes it tough to get balls to stop on them. The fairways and tee boxes are in decent shape, and I was pleasantly surprised by the condition of the bunkers. This course is also very walkable, and there is a driving range on the property.

What’s Not So Good: Even though I did like the overall condition of the greens, there are a few that have small spots that need repair. Also, there are no hole markers here, which I found a bit odd. This is a busy course with many walkers and pace of play can be an issue.

The Takeaway: Catawba Creek/Gastonia Municipal is a solid little course with good greens that can be played for not a lot of money.

If you are in the area and want to play a round, then this is the course. I’ve been playing every course in the area for years and this course is the best all-around (price, upkeep, fairways and greens). I do recommend teeing from the blues, the white’s are a bit short. But I do love the fact that shorter/newer players have the option to tee from somewhere that Isn’t red but is short enough to speed there pace and make a difference in their score. You see some in other reviews complaining about the firmness of the greens. Well they can get firm sometimes but other times they are very receptive. To me that is one of the parts of golf that make it challenging (change)

Great Winter course, heavy over-seeded rye fairways with fast smooth Bermuda greens Renovation is excellent! Course can often play a little wet on a majority of holes. “Fun” course, lots of shot making into the greens. Great price.

The greens on this course are horrible since they replaced them last year. They are like walking on concrete and if you see any break in them do not play it because 95% of the time it doesn’t break. You would think that after being bought out and trying to improve the course the company would hire someone who could keep it up but boy was I wrong and the management sucks. It cost the same to ride 9 holes ($25) as it does to walk… I mean really!!!

Gastonia Municipal Golf Course is a gem tucked away in Gaston County. Don’t let the “city course” title sway you on this one…this is one the nicest courses in the county. The fairways are green, trimmed, and taken care of. The sand bunkers always look good and the greens are rolling true. This course has it all: the blind tee shots, doglegs left and right, Par 5′s reachable in 2, and challenging water features on 8, 12, 13, 14, 15, and 18. The course also has a dedicated driving range and amazing putting green (recently built in the past few years.

I grew up playing at the course and have watched it grow to its current state. If you’re looking for a great round of golf for a great price, give this course a shot. It’s one of my favorites to this day.
